ATS Resume Scams, Scams, Scams. Be Cautious!

Scams targeting jobseekers have been running rampant all summer long in our industry, and I’d like to point a few out.

The fake recruiter scam is most prominent on LinkedIn. Jobseekers will be contacted by someone claiming to be a recruiter who has an immediate opening for them. The only catch: their resume. They are directed to a resume writer who informs them that they need a rewrite before they can be officially hired. None of this makes any sense. The jobseeker is out of money, the job is fictitious, and they don’t even get a new resume out of the deal.

This goes hand in hand with the “ATS Score”. Jobseekers will be told that they have a low ATS score and need to optimize their resume. There is simply no such thing as an ATS score. Applicant Tracking Systems are used to filter through high volumes of applications, but they do not assign a blanket score to your resume. RUN from anyone claiming that your resume has a low ATS score.

Many disreputable online resume writer also take part in engagement farming. Have you ever seen a post offering resume writing or review services from a nearly blank account that receives hundreds or even thousands of one-word responses? These bad actors belong to large engagement farming groups who exist only to trick the algorithm and push their posts from within the group.

Be very careful who you do business with. Vet businesses and individuals before you give them anything.
